Robert is a systems thinker. Having studied ecology, genetics and evolutionary biology he is skilled in inferring patterns and connections. He’s also skilled at explaining complex issues for general audiences.
From 2009-2011 he led the Futurewatch programme at New Zealand's former Ministry of Research, Science and Technology. So he has a deep understanding of technological and social trends and developments, and foresight techniques.
Subsequently, he has provided strategic advice and insights on emerging issues to NZ government and research organisations. He helped develop Sport NZ’s 2020+ strategy.
Previous clients include the Department of Internal Affairs, BRANZ, Science New Zealand, Sport NZ, New Zealand’s Science Media Centre, AgResearch, NZ Search & Rescue, and Research & Education Advanced Network NZ. He has delivered his “How to think like a futurist” presentation to a variety of organisations.
Robert writes about foresight and futures thinking on his Substack blog Future Salience, and occasionally comments in the media on these futures issues.
